After learning about betting point spreads, our favorite newbie bettor Emily wanted to know about betting tennis. There are no point spreads in tennis because there is no meaningful way to measure how much a tennis player wins or loses by. In tennis, all that really matters is who wins and loses the match, and that’s where money line wagering comes into play. Following are tips on understanding tennis odds and betting tennis matches.

For example, Emily’s favorite tennis player Serena Williams wins a majority of her matches. The chances of winning for Serena’s opponent, let’s say the 102nd-ranked player in the world, would be less than 50-50 for this very reason.

Thus, sportsbooks would make bettors wager significantly more money on Serena than her opponent because of the disproportionate likelihood of Serena winning the match.

In the case of Serena Williams versus an overmatched opponent, a reasonable money line would require Serena bettors to risk $400 to win $100; while a $100 bet on her opponent would win $360.

Here’s how the money line would be listed: Serena Williams -400 / #102 Ranked Opponent +360

Every $400 bet on Serena nets a $100 profit if she wins (plus the return of the $400 risked). If her opponent pulls off the upset, $100 bet on the underdog would profit $360 (plus the return of the $100 risked). Another popular way of betting tennis is picking the winner of each tournament before it starts. In fact, “Betting to Win” an outcome event like Wimbledon is the most common way to wager on tennis. Since tennis has multiple tournaments over the course of a year, “Betting to Win” obviously offers numerous wagering opportunities. It is very important to note that not all the competitors in a tennis tournament may be listed, so another tennis betting option is a “field” bet which includes all other competitors not listed.

The tennis odds on a “field” bet are typically comparable to a bet on the favorite in order to protect sportsbooks from taking a big hit if a major upset occurs. In exchange for a lesser payout, field bettors gain the advantage of having more than one entrant that can win for them. For example, the top 20 players going into a tournament might be listed with their own individual odds while the rest of the players are grouped together.

Some tennis players perform better on different surfaces, and it must be noted that the French Open is played on clay and Wimbledon on grass. One of the most revolutionary changes that the advent of the internet has produced, is the introduction of new and sophisticated online betting systems, where the ‘traditional’ bookmaker is no longer king.

The new ‘breed’ of betting systems is called a betting exchange and the way that these exchanges operate, means that as a punter the odds are more stacked in our favour, which is of course no bad thing.

Betting exchanges such as Betfair enable punters to place bets against each other in support of which horse they believe will win or lose a particular race. If one person believes that a particular horse will win a race; they will back that horse and offer a wager price. If someone else believes that the horse will lose the race, and they like the odds that are offered, they will lay it. At that point, the bet is matched.

Players Control The Odds, Not The Bookmakers

According to Betfair, during peak hours they’ve matched over 12,000 bets per minute. This represents a significant marketplace that will see very large sums of money changing hands every day. On betting exchanges such as Betfair, the players themselves are in complete control of the odds and the prices – not the bookmakers.

As far as comparing it to the betting systems of yesteryear, it is about as far removed as you could get.

First of all, as there are no bookmakers, there are no longer any hefty margins either. With a betting exchange, a punter always wins, not a bookmaker. Odds are never manipulated to protect profit margin and the only cost for using the system is a low commission that is applied to net winnings. Such betting exchanges typically offer punters much higher odds than traditional bookmakers, and that’s why I always recommend comparing their odds against that of the high street bookie.

How Does This System Work?

Maybe the most unique and attractive aspect to betting exchanges is the fact that its the punters who get to choose the odds, not the bookie. Players can enjoy the flexibility of offering their own odds within a betting system that gives the punter almost complete control and the ability to dictate a certain event on their own terms.

Once this has been done, its then down to other interested punters to actually provide a counter-offer to these odds. If the originally player who placed the bet likes your counter-offer – they accept and the bet is matched. Either way, one player or another is going to win and make money.

Why The Punter Always Wins

This approach to betting of course means that a punter always wins. This represents extremely high liquidity across a huge range of markets, and many betting exchanges attract both very high-rollers and small-time punters as well, with small minimum bets available to cater for the latter.

>From my own experience, I have found the arena of betting exchanges quite exciting and it’s very hard to beat the pure excitement of what Betfair calls an “in-play”. In-play betting allows players to use their own analysis to try to predict results of an event even after the event has begun. This means that even right into the middle of any event, two people can immediately place a bet regarding the outcome of that event.

The excitement of such a betting system is that two players can pit their wits against each other regarding their ability to do real-time analysis in predicting what they believe will be the outcome. This represents high-energy, fast moving action where the odds change by the second.

In fact, Betfair and their betting exchange counterparts have presented the public with a new and innovative approach to placing bets, that of course removes the middleman; otherwise know as the bookmaker.

Which Came First?

Most people would think that the bookmaker is the image of traditional betting, well maybe not. Betting exchanges offer people a method to directly place bets against each other, very much like nobility used to do during the earliest days of one-on-one thoroughbred racing, so maybe it is the exchange that is closer to tradition?

Whatever your thoughts or beliefs, exchanges have forced the bookmaker to look at its business model, and in time this will benefit one set of important individuals, the ones who provide the money, the punter.

They don’t treat your bookmaking business with the same respect as you do. They often will see you and your players as just another account number….another onshore bookie out of the pile. Try to lean for a more conservative price per head operation …they understand that this market is not one you want to lead a head on battle with. They respect your work and your business and treat you with the professionalism you and your players deserve and expect. They will give you the availability to grow…YOU have the edge. Time in business is a must. Proven track record does not necessarily mean a flashy logo of some 2 wit “watchdog organization”. Believe me there are more than one of those out there endorsing their own book. Their own book??? Yes…their own offshore sportsbook…that’s right boys and girls…there are these so called watchdog or betting organizations which where created and owned by the same sportsbooks and casinos they so gleefully refer and endorse. Do your homework…a nice gold seal of approval from the somethingnot betting association of never never land is not necessarily a company touched by God.”

2. Location: This should be the first thing you do…Make sure that the PPH provider you choose is Legally Licensed and Bonded in the Country it claims to be in.

3. Reputation/Integrity: DO YOUR HOMEWORK….we are talking about YOUR business here = your money. I can never stress this enough…don’t believe everything you see (or read for that matter). There are several ways to run checks on the Offshore Sportsbooks and offshore per head services at hand. There are some verifiable and known sources: The Prescription, Bettors World, etc. Yet as mentioned before…be carefull. Not all is good and true . Google the Company in question. Check Internet Casino and sportsbook blacklists, there are hundreds of posting forums and Blogs out there with VERY useful information on the offshore gaming and casino industry.

But times have changed and its easy to spot a fly by night betting offshore operation with a wishy washy service…they rarely last through the 1st season. Go for the safe way…they are out there and when you do find a good price per head turnkey service stick to it like a bad habbit, you and your business will grow rather, when a company is tied to a loser post-up sportsbook, you know what to expect for your clients.”

4. Service / Offerings: Most turnkey sportsbooks now are open 24-hours a day, 7-days a week, 365-days a year. If not they will remain open untill the last game of the day goes off the board. Reputable price per head sportsbooks will offer quarter lines, half time lines, game lines, money lines, propositions, multiple casinos, horse betting, and more. They will have internet access for your players and alternate back up sites for emergencies or problems on the main site. Their staff should be FLUENT in english. You should be able to understand the staff. An exceptionally reputable book offshore will look to accommodate your players by offering to actually hire personnel for your players language needs as is the case with OldSchool Bookie (www.oldschoolbookie.com) . Some onshore bookmakers have foreigners as part of their package and as additional service this book offers staff who can accommodate your players. You are looking for a price per head turnkey solution to better service your clients – therefore service is one of the key deciding factors on who to go with.

Always consider that if the company you are considering is publicly held, as is the case with most large Sportsbooks, then your security is compromised (it CAN BE accessed via the government). Integrity within the company you choose should never be left second hand. If their Integrity is at question, you can assume your data will be passed on to the wrong people.

The Act rendered it illegal for operators not licensed in Australia to advertise or offer their product to Australian Residents – supposedly protecting local operators. Another key provision of the Act was a ban on all “in-play” bets – supposedly limiting problem gambling opportunities.

An in-play bet is basically a bet on an event occurring within a game, placed after the game has commenced. It offers an enormous range of bet possibilities on any given game. In football, in-plays may include bets on who will score the next goal, what the winning margin will be, or who will win the game…all placed after the starting whistle has blown. For longer games like cricket, in-plays extend per game bet options enormously.

Of course the big upside for the AFL is an estimated doubling of licensing revenue from the likes of Betfair and Tabcorp. And the Government is said to be quite receptive to the submission. With increased wagering tax revenue why wouldn’t they be?

It seems clear now that the initial hope that a piece of legislation could prevent Australians betting with offshore operators has waned. And concerns about limiting bet options for problem gamblers has given way to a rush to offer competing bet options in order to maximize local operator earnings and tax revenue.

When the plus sign is listed, the number indicates how much money will be won if the person wages 100 units of currency and the bet is successful. Conversely, if a $100 was placed on the Knicks and this bet came up, the profit would amount to $310.
